The Senate has adopted the Farm Bill - The US Senate adopted the Farm Bill on 11 June. The US Farm Bill provides for the withdrawal of direct payments, the strengthening of agricultural insurance, the reintroduction of counter-cyclical payments for production in the south and a reduction in the budget allocated to domestic food aid. Attention has now shifted to the House of Representatives whose turn it is to review the bill. There are two particularly divisive issues: the reduction in the food aid budget and government intervention in market management. If the House ends up voting for a Farm Bill, both bills will go before a joint committee for harmonisation.
